2011 Athens Karate School Winter Tuite Training Camp by John Shipes 2011
December 7th through December 14th of 2011 was a memorable occasion for the Athens Karate School in Athens, Texas. It was the site of the 10th annual Athens Karate School Winter Tuite Camp hosted by my students and I. It was made even more special with a visit by Kaicho Isao Kise on his first trip to the United States by himself.
The weekend began on Wednesday, December 7th when my student, Sensei Nathan Batson, and I met Kaicho at the Dallas/Ft Worth International Airport on his arrival from Okinawa. After a prolonged trip through customs, Kaicho finally walked through the gate and the weekend got underway.
Thursday was spent reviewing techniques with Kaicho that would be the heart of the weekend training camp for his approval and comments and corrections. Several hours were spent reviewing these techniques with Kaicho and some adjustments were made. These techniques represented an expansion of our current tuite requirements, fairly significantly, to further our members training in the tuite techniques of our system.
The techniques were reorganized by myself and presented to Kaicho as a possible new set of requirements. All of the prior requirements were included with a few eliminations due to repetitiveness and a larger number of new techniques including many new joint locking techniques and the supporting techniques to make them work such as change-body an other types of footwork, weight shifting, flow drills, etc. Kaicho was pleased with the new techniques and Thursday was brought to a close with some photo opportunities with the kids class in the Athens Karate School and Kaicho and I heading off to the hotel where the seminar was being held.
Friday morning, bright and early, we got the camp underway. Many of my students and friends from around the country were in attendance which made the camp even better. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were devoted to practicing this "new" set of techniques and lots of very hard work and great camaraderie were evident throughout the weekend. All the techniques were reviewed under the watchful eye of Kaicho and with his help, the weekend was a great success.
Kaicho demonstrated and taught 2 sport kata, Passai Dai International and Seipai, to the delight of everyone. The kata are beautiful and it was a great opportunity for everyone to learn them from Kaicho Isao Kise. Virtually all of the students practiced the kata with Kaicho and several were able to learn them well enough to practice them after the camp. It was a wonderful session.
Additionally, Shihan Greg Lazarus taught a session on sparring drills on Sunday morning while the higher (3rd dan and above) students practiced gun and knife defenses and chokes. I heard many good comments about the session and everyone who attended enjoyed it greatly.
Sunday afternoon was a winding down session since most everyone had left by then. The time was reserved for review of the weekend's activities and techniques with approximately 30 or so students remaining. Sunday evening was rest time and I was ready for it. It was a very active weekend and I was very tired. Kaicho and I took it easy and headed to Dallas on Monday morning for some shopping and relax time.
This camp was a perfect 10th anniversary camp for the Winter Tuite Camp. We had approximately 110 people in attendance from all over the country including Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Washington, New Hampshire, Colorado, Kansas, Georgia, Arizona, California, Minnesota, and of course, Okinawa. It was even more special with Kaicho making his first trip to the US by himself and all three US Directors were in attendance and all four 8th dans in the US were in attendance. All but 2 or 3 of the federations 7th dans in the US were in attendance and all of this added up to a very special camp.
I want to very much thank Kaicho for making this trip, and to my friends and fellow directors, Shihan Greg Lazarus and Shihan Jeff Ader for coming. Also, a special thanks to Shihan Dave Fasig, Shihan Loren Engelby, Shihan Taco Aguilar, Shihan Don Foster, Shihan Kenny Broadway, Shihan Bill Ackerman, Shihan Ron Gordines, Shihan Les Reed, and Shihan Craig Werner for all your help and support. Most especially, I want to thank all the instructors and students who gave of their time and money to come to this camp. It was a great success and I hope you all enjoyed it.
EKKC opened its downtown Everett dojo about six months ago . There is enough room for 20-25 students to workout in formation (even with 6-foot Bo!)
The Masters' wall and Weapons wall came together in a way that we hope makes our teachers proud.
Sensei Tim Amey has worked tirelessly to bring all the elements of a traditional Shorin-ryu dojo together with the help of many friends and students' parents.
Recently EKKC held the March 2011 Women's Self-Defense Seminar. Our students included high school and college ages, moms, grandmoms and corrections facility personnel. The material included various techniques against grabs, chokes, takedowns and knife attacks. Sensei Amey covered several real-world scenarios from purse snatchers and parking lots, to the use of mace/pepper spray, as well as topics from legal liability to state of mind. Feedback was positive - and the ladies requested another session!
On March 25-27, EKKC held its Second Annual Tuite & Self-Defense seminar. We were fortunate enough to be joined in this effort by 8th Dan Hanshi John Shipes as well as considerable talents from Cedar Park, NW Budokan and Tyler Karate Academy, as well as the unique skills of 6th Dan Sensei Andy Marrone.
A feisty but focused group of kids joined us for the Friday night Federation workout.
As part of their path to Karate Instructor Certification, Senpais Max Puls and Jessica Batson led one-steps and ko-te-ate (body toughening).
Sensei Tim also ran through some fundamentals for kumite (fighting) strategy. Here Leroy assists Sensei with a demonstration.
Overall it was an outstanding seminar and a major learning opportunity for students from several dojos to practice an entire spectrum of self-defense techniques, from knife defense to energy drills. Thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to another great weekend next year!
Following the highly motivating visit of Hanshi-Sei Kise and Kaicho in November 2009 the Ballarat Karate Club has had a great year in 2010, withthe promotion of seven successful Shodan candidates. This is the greatest number of black belt promotions in one year in the 45 year history of the Club.
The year got off the a flying start in April with the successful promotion to Shodan of two “Shin Shi No Kai” (“Old Warrior” – over 50s) candidates Gary Whittaker and Dr. Terry Sands (both 63 years of age).
In the second half of this year five seniors candidates were successful in promotion to Shodan. These candidates have between 15 and 22 years of training time for an average of 16 years each prior to taking the examination. Four of the candidates began in the juniors program (for students aged 6 to 16), their commencement age ranging from 6 years old to 14 years old. Each candidate entered into intense supervised and unsupervised preparation some four months prior to their examination date, undergoing several formal preliminary kata reviews preparatory to the examination. The examinations were held one candidate per month over five months.
The core part of their examinations consisted of performing all karate and kobudo kata up to and including Shodan to the satisfaction of the grading panel, followed by a kumite line-up of 18 to 20 fights against opponents ranked from green belt through to 2nd Dan. The grading panel of senior Ballarat Karate Club black belts was led by Hanshi Dr. Barry Packham 9th Dan, Kyoshi Wayne Reddrop, 7th Dan and Ballarat karate Club Founder Shihan Barry Govan, 4th Dan.
Being awarded Shodan holds a special place in the Ballarat Karate Club pantheon – it is the forum in which the candidate for the first time not only convinces the panel of the candidates’ expertise and knowledge of the kata and techniques of the Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito system to that level, but of their determination and fighting heart when pressed hard and taken to the brink of exhaustion and beyond.
All five candidates acquitted themselves very well, demonstrating the expected technical expertise, understanding and fighting heart. During the kumite several of the candidates suffered concussions and suspected fractures but all completed their line-ups, fighting on with heart despite injuries and exhaustion to the close of their final bouts. At the conclusion of the examination each candidate walked from the floor unassisted, knowing in their heart that they had earned the right to wear a black belt of the Club and the Style.
The attached photograph shows the successful candidates from left to right - Marcus Cassells, Brad Fisher, Tim Russell, Daniel West and David Mounier; standing behind are Kyoshi Reddrop and Hanshi Packham.

Shihan Loren Engelby and I arrived for our long awaited visit to Okinawa late on a Tuesday night to the smilingfaces of our friends, Sensei Jerry De Vries and Sensei David Meikle and a nice cold Orion. After connecting with Kaicho, Shihan Greg Lazarus, Sensei Mike Abrams and Ms. Sonomi Atsuwaza-Windley, and some darts and noodles, we made our way to the Hotel Akasaka, our home away from home.
Our trip to Okinawa was jam-packed with activity including many training sessions at Grandmaster Kise's Gunner's Gym classes and Kaicho Isao Kise’s Honbu Dojo classes. It was, as always, a great pleasure and a great honor to train with these two karate greats and much was learned and brought home. Sensei Jerry De Vries was his customary happy and smiling self and spent a great deal of time showing us all around the sites of Okinawa and it included many sites indeed. We visited a number of the UNESCO sites on Okinawa including Shurijo (twice), Nakagusukujo and Zakimijo. All three are incredible places to visit while Shurijo is the most completely restored and is simply magnificent. We also visited the summer palace and grounds which are absolutely beautiful. Sensei De Vries pointed out a small house at the entrance of the grounds where Bushi Matsumura lived out his twilight years in his final service to the King of Okinawa. Sensei De Vries also took us to ring the Friendship Bell which was a very special event for the three of us. We also visited the All Japan EISA festival while we were there and were entertained by all the drummers and dancers competing there.
One day during our visit, some folks from the Honbu Dojo arranged a special tour of sites around the island which relate more directly to our lineage. This tour was arranged by Kazu san and we were accompanied by Uezu san with Teppan san serving as our tour guide and Taika san serving as our driver. We were also accompanied by LouBee and Keith and visited such sites as Shurijo, Shureido, and a shopping area. The most special part of the tour for me was a visit to the tomb of Bushi Matsumura. It was such an honor. We also had lunch at a special Soba house (Shimujo) that we were told was the oldest wooden structure still remaining on Okinawa and was a former Samurai house. A little ways down from Shureido, we also visited the ruins of an old monastery where a number of Okinawan Samurai were buried.
There were a number of really special things that we did on this trip but one of the most special was having Sonomi san there at the same time acting as interpreter for us and for Kaicho. This facilitated a much greater depth of understanding and communication and was a real treat as Shihan Lazarus and I met with Kaicho and Sonomi san and discussed a new set of by-laws for operation of the US branch of the federation. It would have been essentially impossible to obtain the same level of understanding without her.
I want to thank everyone who went to so much trouble to ensure a wonderful visit to Okinawa for us. It was great having my friend Shihan Lazarus and his fellows there while we were there, even if we didn’t get to go to the tug-of-war and the Orion beer festival with them. We were treated so kindly everywhere we went as that’s how the Okinawan people are in general and it makes it such a wonderful place to visit. Sensei Mike Abrams commented, after we returned, that he found himself being a little nicer to people because of how well he was treated. Thank you everyone and especially Mary De Vries for the loan of your husband for a few days. Most especially, Grandmaster Fusei Kise and Kaicho Isao Kise for being such gracious hosts and such wonderful people to welcome us the their world for a few days.
